- Butter cake: Available flavours in this range are vanilla, pineapple, cherry, martini, vanilla Biscoff, or vanilla raspberry.

Prefer to collect? Choose Pickup at checkout and pick up from our Balaclava store at 215 Carlisle Street, Balaclava VIC 3183, a short walk from Balaclava station. We’re open till 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and closed Sundays. Bring your order confirmation and plan a flat spot in the car. A passenger’s lap is no place for buttercream.

Vintage Cake FAQs

1. What is a vintage cake?

A vintage cake is a celebration cake decorated in an old-fashioned design. It mostly has layers of piped shells, swags, beads, and borders, generally on a heart-shaped base. The look is derivative of the Lambeth method of over-piping. As it was popularised by Joseph Lambeth’s 1930s decorating guide, and made a comeback through social media.

2. Vintage or retro cake: what’s the difference?

There isn’t one. Bakers and shoppers use both names for the same nostalgic, heavily piped style. Some save “retro” for brighter colourways and “vintage” for pastels, but the cake underneath is identical.

3. Do you make mini or lunchbox vintage cakes?

Not at the moment. Our smallest vintage cake serves 10. A lunchbox cake is a single-serve mini cake sold in a takeaway-style box, and it isn’t part of our range yet.

4. How far ahead should I order a vintage cake?

We recommend ordering at least 24 hours before for a standard vintage cake, and 48 hours for eggless, vegan, gluten-free or sugar-free. For a custom design, one week in advance is ideal but we can make last day arrangements as well (not last minute). Around Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Christmas, book ahead because dates fill fast.

5. How do I add a photo to my photo cake?

Choose a sharp, well-lit image. Close-ups print better than wide group shots, as faces in close ups are more visible and in group shots they end up tiny.

6. Are your vintage cakes safe for allergies?

We cannot guarantee that any cake is allergen-free. Our kitchen handles peanuts, tree nuts, milk, egg, sesame, fish, shellfish, soy, lupin and wheat, so traces may be present. Note any allergy when you order and we will advise.

7. Can I send a vintage cake as a gift?

Yes. Enter the recipient’s address at checkout and add delivery instructions, such as a building code or a “don’t ring the bell, it’s a surprise”, in the order note.

8. Can I change or cancel my order?

Yes, up to 10 days before your delivery or pickup date. Each change costs $10, refunds carry a $50 administration fee, and orders already in production can’t be refunded. Approved refunds take two to four weeks.
