Book your wedding cake1- 2 weeks before your wedding date. Most boutique bakers take a limited number of wedding orders per weekend, so the date matters more than the design.

Wedding sooner than that? You have options. Our ready-to-order wedding designs can be made in as little as 3 to 5 days, so a short timeline doesn't mean settling.

There's no single right answer, because the pressure on a cake studio's calendar isn't spread evenly across the year. A June wedding and an October wedding sit at opposite ends of it. Book according to your date, not according to a general rule.

Here's how that works in practice.

The short version, by wedding month

Australian weddings cluster into two busy stretches: spring and early autumn. Booking urgency follows that curve almost exactly.

Your wedding month

Book your cake

Why

October, November

1 to 2 weeks

Two of the three busiest months in the country

March, April

1 to 2 weeks

Autumn peak, books out early

September

1 week

Season is starting, weekends fill fast

December, February

1 week

Popular, but heat and holidays thin the field

January, May, August

3-5 days

Steadier availability

June, July

3-5 days

The quietest weekends of the year

The numbers behind this are consistent across industry data. November accounts for roughly 15% of Australian weddings, March around 13%, and October about 12%. June and July sit at just 4% and 3%.

There's a second squeeze most couples miss. Of the 120,844 marriages recorded in Australia in 2024, close to 55,000 fell on a Saturday. Almost half of every wedding in the country lands on one day of the week. A baker who takes three wedding cakes per Saturday isn't turning away work in November because they're busy that month. They're turning it away because four couples wanted the same Saturday.

What actually gets booked out first

Couples usually assume the design is the bottleneck. It isn't. Three things run out, roughly in this order:

1. The date. A boutique cake studio has a hard ceiling on how many wedding cakes it can produce, deliver and set up in a single weekend. Once those slots are gone, no amount of budget opens another one.

2. Peak Saturdays. The Saturdays either side of a long weekend, and Saturdays in late October and mid-March, go first. Some are spoken for more than a year out.

3. Consultation and tasting slots. These run on a separate calendar to production. In busy months, the wait for a tasting can add three to four weeks before you're even in a position to book.

That last one catches people out. If you want a tasting before you commit, add a month to whatever timeline you had in mind.

The full countdown

You don't need to do everything at once. Here's how the cake fits around the rest of your planning.

12 to 9 months out

Lock in your venue and guest number first. Almost every cake decision depends on those two things, and no baker can quote properly without them. Once you have a date, start shortlisting cake studios. Look at real weddings rather than styled shoots, and check whether they deliver to your venue.

9 to 6 months out

Enquire, book a tasting if you want one, and place your deposit. This is the sweet spot. You'll still have your pick of designers, and you'll have plenty of runway if you change your mind about the design.

6 to 4 months out

Confirm the design, tier count, flavours and colour palette. Send through your stylist's mood board and your florist's details if fresh flowers are going on the cake. Bakers and florists need to talk to each other, and it's easier when there's no deadline pressure.

3 to 2 months out

Finalise guest numbers and adjust the cake size if needed. Most studios allow a size change up to a point, so ask where that cut-off sits. Confirm the delivery window with your venue coordinator.

4 weeks out

Final payment usually falls due here. Confirm the delivery address, access instructions, and who's receiving the cake at the venue. If your reception is upstairs or the loading dock closes early, now is the time to say so.

Week of the wedding

Nothing should be left to do. Your baker confirms delivery time, provides a cutting guide for the venue staff, and notes any non-edible elements the kitchen needs to remove before serving.

Booking at short notice: what's still possible

Plenty of couples come to us with three months on the clock, sometimes far less. A supplier falls through, the guest list doubles, or the cake genuinely wasn't a priority until suddenly it was. It's more common than the timelines above suggest.

The good news is that a long lead time is only essential for fully custom work. Our ready-to-order wedding designs are already developed and tested, which means they can usually be produced in 3 to 5 days rather than months. You're choosing from proven designs instead of building one from scratch, and that's the entire difference.

Short notice gets easier still if you're flexible on any one of these:

1. The design. A signature or ready-to-order design slots into a production schedule far more easily than a bespoke build.

2. The day. Friday and Sunday weddings open up availability that a Saturday won't.

3. The format. Cupcake towers, dessert tables and a smaller cutting cake cover the same guest count without needing a full custom production slot.

What genuinely doesn't work is a late booking that wants all of it at once: a peak Saturday, a complex bespoke build and a fresh-flower install. Something has to give. Tell us which part matters most and we'll work around the rest.

Wedding in the next few weeks? Send us your date and guest count. We'll tell you the same day whether we can do it.

Melbourne venues change the maths

Where you're getting married affects the timeline as much as when.

Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula. Regional delivery means longer transport in a temperature-controlled setup, and a setup window that has to be agreed with the venue in advance. Book earlier, and confirm the delivery slot at the same time you confirm the cake.

CBD, Docklands and South Yarra. Loading access and lift bookings are the usual friction points, not the cake. Ask your venue coordinator for the delivery protocol before you finalise anything.

Summer weddings anywhere. Buttercream behaves differently in the heat. If your reception is outdoors between December and February, raise it early so the design and the delivery timing can account for it.

Before you enquire, have these ready

You'll get a faster and more accurate quote if you can answer these five things:

  1. Wedding date and venue name

  2. Guest count, and whether the cake is dessert or an extra

  3. A rough budget range

  4. Two or three inspiration images

  5. Any dietary requirements across your guest list, including vegan, eggless or gluten free

That's genuinely all it takes to get a real quote rather than a vague one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book a wedding cake a year in advance?

Yes, and for October, November or March weddings it's a good idea. Most studios will hold your date with a deposit and finalise the design much later.

How much deposit is needed to secure the date?

It varies by studio. Expect a deposit at booking, with the balance due around four weeks before the wedding.

Can I change the cake design after booking?

Usually yes, up to a cut-off point. Design changes are far simpler than size changes, and size changes are easier the further out you are.

What happens if my guest numbers change?

Most bakers allow a size adjustment up until final payment. Confirm that cut-off when you book so there are no surprises.

Do I need a tasting before booking?

Not at all. If you'd like one, our Wedding Cake Tasting Events run once every three months, so it's worth checking the next date early. If that doesn't line up with your timeline, visit our Balaclava store any time and try the cupcake range, which uses the same flavour bases as our wedding tiers.

Is three months too late to book a wedding cake?

No. Custom designs need longer, but ready-to-order wedding designs can often be produced in 3 to 5 days. Availability depends more on the day of the week and how bespoke the design is than on how far out you are.

What's the fastest a wedding cake can be made?

For a ready-to-order design, 3 to 5 days is realistic. Fully custom work with bespoke sugar detailing or fresh-flower installation needs considerably longer.

When is the quietest time to get married in Australia?

June and July. Between them they account for less than 10% of Australian weddings, which means better availability across every supplier, not just cakes.

Can we have a different flavour for each tier?

Yes. Mix and match is available across every tiered design, from two tiers up to five, at no extra charge. Vegan, gluten-free and eggless options are available for an additional $15 per tier.

Do you set up the cake at the venue?

For five-tier cakes and above, our team delivers and professionally sets up your cake at the venue. Smaller cakes arrive safely packaged and ready to display.

How will I know when my cake is arriving?

On delivery day you'll receive an SMS with a live tracking link, so you can see exactly where your cake is without having to chase anyone during hair and makeup.

What time will the cake arrive?

We deliver around your wedding time rather than a fixed delivery window, so the cake arrives to suit your run sheet. We'll confirm the timing with you and your venue coordinator before the day.

Ready to check your date?

Whether your wedding is next year or next month, the fastest way to find out where you stand is simply to ask. Send through your date, venue and guest count, and we'll tell you honestly what's available.

Planning ahead? Browse our wedding cakes Melbourne collection and lock in your date early, especially for an October, November or March wedding.

Short on time? Our ready-to-order designs can be made in as little as 3 to 5 days. Get in touch with your date and we'll confirm availability the same day.
